Currently, renewable energy in Europe continues to grow in importance. Most countries are aimed at reaching sufficient levels of renewable energy development in the next four years, but some are beating their renewables goals earlier.

Sweden, Bulgaria, Estonia and Lithuania are among these countries. Then go Finland, Croatia, Romania, Italy and the Czech Republic. In these nations renewable energy was developed to the levels targeted by the government before 2020. They serve as an example for other countries seeking to achieve these goals as soon as possible.

Such a competition is part of 20-20-20 targets meaning a 20% cut in emissions of greenhouse gases, a 20% increase in the share of renewables in the energy mix, and a 20% cut in energy consumption over the next four years. This strategy is also aimed at implementing the target set at the Paris climate conference to reduce emissions by at least 40% by 2030.

Sweden has been at the forefront of EU efforts towards a global climate deal. It produces half of its energy from renewables.

Denmark is the country that is not among the leaders but succeeded greatly in the development of renewable energy. It broke the world record for wind power in 2015.

However, there are countries that continue to actively pollute. They are Germany, France and the United Kingdom. Together they account for 45 % of the total greenhouse gas emissions in the EU. Only France is taking steps to implement its emission reduction targets.
