Symbol @ or the at sign is an essential part of any email address. However, each nationality has its own name of the symbol. For example, Russians call it "a dog" whereas Italians read it as "a small snail". At the same time, in Sweden, it is called "an elephant's trunk".

Origin of word "SPAM"

Every user of the email services knows the word "SPAM". At the moment, it describes emails that contain irrelevant information, which clutters virtual space. However, initially SPAM is a brand of canned cooked pork made in the US. The producer used to send a huge number of lists to attract buyers. Later, the word became nominal.

High-ranking user

Statistical data showed that Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II was the first user of the email services. She started emailing in 1976. However, the first email was sent by Raymond Samuel Tomlinson, a computer programmer, in 1972.

Emails from space

Nowadays, electronic resources are used worldwide. Moreover, they are becoming popular even in space. Thus, emails can be sent to astronauts on the International space station (ISS). Notably, the first email from space to Earth was successfully sent in 1991.
