The plane crashed while approaching the airport of the Colombian city of Medellin. It's known that there was 27 members of the Brazilian football club Chapecoense on the board plane who were travelling to Columbia to play against one of the local clubs in the South American Cup. Totally there was 81 people on the board.
The Columbia government reported the survivors. Preliminary figures indicate that from six to ten people managed to survive, including three Brazilian players.
The airborne vehicle was holding on from Bolivia to Columbia.
The local authorities immediately arrived to the place of the crash. The Mayor Medellin Federico Gutierrez was the first who confirmed the survivors.

The air crash took place around midnight local time in the highlands near the city of Rionegro. According to preliminary data, the accident could have occurred due to fuel starvation.
So far the emergency rescue workers have extracted from under the wreckage the bodies of 25 fatalities. The recovery operations were complicated with the weather condition.
